Another reason for filter to work this way round is that particles which
collect on the outside are easier to see. Of course this doesn't apply to
cartridge type filters as on modern cars (and GBE kits), but motorcycles and
aircraft use filters with seperate paper or mesh elements. On aircraft we
spend lots of time gazing at mesh filters trying to spot any debris in
there.
