What it does, is let any blow-by out of the crankcase. No engine has a
"perfect" seal of the rings to the cylinder walls. There is always a little
gets by. If that pressure was allowed to build up in the crankcase, it would
eventually blow out all the seals, or froce oil back past the rings on a
cylinder that is on its "intake stroke". This would case major oil leaks or
major oil burning.
The early VW's vented this out under the car, through the breather. The
later VW's, (emission control laws), just returned this to the air cleaner,
where it is burned by the engine. This later version was refered to as
"closed crankcase ventilation".
