BUT, when the "paper pack" (that is what is called in the trade) is formed,
the inside pleats are compressed fairly tightly together. Therefore, there
is actually smaller area exposed to the fluid that is being filtered. On the
outside of the pack, the pleats are fanned out, exposing the entire surface
area. Most filters when designed, have a "surface area" specified in square
inches. This works out to a certain number of pleats +/-. We have a spec on
ours +/- 2 pleats, and we try to hold it to the + side. There are a few fuel
filters, that because of the way they have to be install, that they filter
from the inside out, but they are designed to operate in this mode, and the
pleats are more open on the inside.
