Simon,

Australian Type 3s had differences from Type 3s made in Germany. For example,
we didn't get disc brakes and 12volt electrics until late 1968 and didn't get
CV-joint "IRS" until 1969. Prices for Type 3s here depend very much on the
actual condition of the vehicle rather than its model or age. The most
sophisticated Type 3s were the 1973 models (made here until early 1974 when
the Passat replaced the Type 3) but a really good condition 1966 or 1967
"1600TS" Fastback is much sought after as are the 1965 to 1966 Type 3 Panel
Vans. My advice would be to try and locate a vehicle which is original (e.g.
one elderly widow driver for the last thirty years!) even if there might be a
little floorpan or surface rust rather than one which has been modified and
tarted up. A country car will be more likely to be rust free and is worth
driving a long way to look at.

If you went to see Garry Collis the proprietor of Wolfsburg Automotive at
Essendon in the outer suburbs of Melbourne he is likely to have a few Type 3s
for sale and would be worth talking to. He knows Type 3s well and has a rare
fully imported 1973 VW 1600 Variant LE (squareback) which he uses as his own
daily driver.

Best of luck,

Simon Glen
Toowoomba, Queensland.
