Just try and pull it in and out and you'll notice what a new shock will feel like. Then you can compare it with your old one. If the resistance is none or close to none, you know the condition. Shorter shocks are typically the same units, only shorter. If you use stock length shocks on a lowered car, the shocks will bottom out before the stock bumpstops (goes for all kinds of cars) so the ride will be bumpy. Also, on cars with coil springs, one can actually risk that the springs move out of their seats if the shocks are topping out.
