Jim wrote , When you installed the cam did you check to see that it was the right size for your crank gear and case? Are you aware of the size differences and how to check and install them? If your cam gear was a little too large, then this would cause huge loads on the gear teeth. The missing air duct on your right side: Was that the aftermarket one that feeds the lower heat exchanger around your header exhaust, or did you mean the lower half of the duct that carries air forward from the fan housing to the cylinders? -------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------- Jim, I have never heard of this, about cam gear to crank gear matching to case matching, was this some kind of mystery data not mentioned in the books ? I figure if I have a dual releif case that is not from the 60's, it would use a dished cam . Crank gear and it's surounding parts are sold in catalogs as one size and cam with gear custom manufactured or stock/cam reground setups are sold as one size fits all or am I wrong ? If this is a fact then I really goofed because I just put them in there. On the air duct, this looked like the original heavy German one that was modified to fit the the aftermarket header . The day before I fixed it my dad reported lots of smoke coming from that bank of pistons. He was on a Home Depot run with a full heavy load of stuff. The next day I installed an aluminum flexible tube. I was in Japan for two weeks and my dad told me it was running funny for two weeks, it is corrected now even thogh in pieces. was missing duct from fan assembly to heater box.
