A little bit of an update! Sunday got filled with hedge trimming and dry-season rain gutter work, but I was able to grab some weekday evening time to have at the Squareback. I've drained the ATF and have been checking out the shifter cable. I was working toward getting it free at both ends so that I could easily feel if it was binding or funky as the cable slid. Interestingly, I found that rod-like end of the cable, where it mounts to the transmission, is *bent*. It's bent enough that the long, threaded sleeve that mounts the cable to the tranny bracket will no longer let the cable end slide through. This must be why I couldn't move the sifter to the "1" position after last adjusting the cable! Trying to select the "1" position would try to move the cable far enough forward that the bent portion would bind in the sleeve. It may have bent due to overzealous tightening (or is that zealous overtightening?) at some point, what with my mysterious drifting adjustment. Then again, perhaps this explains the giant screwdriver that I found in the car after shipping -- the shippers may have tried to get it out of park by attacking the cable at the tranny. :( This may also explain my funny, drifting adjustment -- perhaps the cable kind of has been binding up for ages. Hmmm, how to straighten the end? It would be easier if I could get the cable out of the car. I believe I can feel two largish bolts holding the cable mounting bracket on the tranny. Since I can't get the sleeve off to remove the cable, is it safe to remove the mounting bracket if I can get to the bolts? -Greg ------------------------------------------------------------------- Too much?
