As the horse power of the VW engine came up, VW started haveing more problems with main bearings. The orginal mains were all aluminum. In about 1965, they started making the center bearing with a steel backing. This gave it more support in the case. I think you will find now days is that all beraing sets you buy have the steel backed center bearing. Unless they have come from some VERY old stock.
