I think I've sorted the problem! At the station before driving the car home from work I put a small scratch, with a screwdriver, in the white paint that I had added the other day and another inline with it on the fan housing. I then drove it home and had a look and it had clearly opened. The paint just wasn't a good enough visual aid! Now this is the stupid part... When at home I noticed that the piece of tubing that I have between the fan housing and the heat exchanger was missing (I've got a header and quiet pack)! Meaning all the cooling air was simply being blown into thin air. This meant that the heat exchanger was getting excessively hot causing the head gasket seal to warp and leak meaning oil dripped on the exchanger, hence the burning smell. I replaced the seal and the pipe with some nice big clamps to stop it falling off. Now I've just got to give it a big run to check its all ok.
