Curious... I think some of the early VW literature I have talks about wetting the gasket surface with oil. I assumed this would make the cork swell up a bit to help it fill inperfections in the head surface. I really can't justify it; I've just always done it. It works, but I don't see why dry shouldn't work, too. OTOH, I really think it can be important to tack the gasket to the cover in a couple of places (in the middle of the long sides) because otherwise I've seen the gaskets bow up there and leak badly. VW added a little protrusion the the topside of the covers about '70, but they never did anything to the bottoms. This always seemed like an oversight to me. I also wipe the head surface, but only to make sure there is no dirt there, not to try to get it dry. - Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------- Unsubscribe? mailto:type3-request@vwtype3.org, Subject: unsubscribe
