There used to be a separate sticker with a picture of the > pulley, but this has disappeared. I pulled out my 72 Owner's manual and found that it actually had clear instructions in it. I'll try to reproduce them here as well as I can. Basic ignition timing............................................5¡ after TDC * * 1 - Basic Adjustment The engine should be at operating temperature. Take vacuum hoses for advance adn retard spark off distributor. Adjust idling speed to 800-900 rpm. Set ignition timing to 5¡ before TDC. 2 - Final Adjustment Reconnect vacuum hoses. Adjust idling speed to 800-900 rpm. Ignition timing should now be at 5¡ after TDC. The Bentley manual confirms that the vacuum retard should be good for 10¡ of advance, so everything seems to be consistent, except for the sticker in the car which specifies the 5¡ ATDC with the vacuum hoses off. I am relieved that the Bentley manual appears to have this entirely correct, but surprised that the factory sticker is wrong. Thanks for your efforts on verifying this, too, Russ. I also checked my Muir and it was completely confused about type 3s, as was the Clymer I looked at. - ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ------------------------------------------------------------------- Unsubscribe? mailto:type3-request@vwtype3.org, Subject: unsubscribe
