Grease is a mixture of a "soap" and an oil. I can never remember what a soap is chemically, but in this case it is just a carrier for the oil. The oil part does all the lubrication while the soap just holds it in place and dispenses it slowly. The soap is the part that contains either lithium, sodium, or calcium.
