Oil is a petroleum product. Various viscositys, but all consisting of
mainly long chain hydrocarbons.

Grease is a mixture of a "soap" and an oil. I can never remember
what a soap is chemically, but in this case it is just a carrier for the
oil. The oil part does all the lubrication while the soap just holds it
in place and dispenses it slowly. The soap is the part that contains
either lithium, sodium, or calcium.

There's an excellent explanation of this often misunderstood
distinction in the Machinerys Handbook.

Okay, sorry. Who posted that, then?
