I just got my Notch out of the Shop for the same problem... Apparently although the car was idling well, it was dumping too much fuel into the cylinders and hence, the excess gas was getting past the rings into the crankcase, mixing with the oil. I'm sure you thought of this, but my car didn't have any noticeable backfire and idled well. It did perform as though it was running rich, but no other indications otherwise. Although my car was running rich, there was no excess carbon deposits on the plugs, although they were a little moist.
