SInce the "S" was a lot more than just the 9 added hp, it was probably also available with the combination of "S" equipment but still with low compression engines. This was probably often more bound by the local market (high altitude, poor gas quality) than the customer's preferences. My car is an "L" whcih is up-level equipped but it was still available with the 1500 engine as an option.
