Do you know for sure that it came from the factory this way?<< Yes, definitely a 1500S with the logo. Had 50K miles when bought (from estate of original owner) and appeared to be completely original. It's a 65 ordered to American spec on the tourist delivery program. I don't think the engine's ever been overhauled or altered. Everything's in place just like in the old factory photos. I found a description of the lower compression 1500S in "Volkswagen 1600 Guide" by Bill Stone (p. 18-20) that says VW introduced it for the US market because thay felt they couldn't market an economy car that required premium fuel here. The compression is the same as the 1500N (7.8 to 1) but in all other respects is the same as the high compression 1500S. He doesn't mention M249 or any way to identify the engine.
