Not wanting to invest in the machine tools necessary to make the change for the Mexican market???? I've heard that the swing set-up is a sturdier set up, and may be better suited to South American road conditions???? Just a thought, OK two :) Did the one you see have the chassis of an IRS later model??? With the mounts for the trailing arms??? The common practice is to rechassis a late model beetle, (90's) on a ball joint 66 up chassis. And then the car is reregistered with the VIN from the rebuilt old model chassis, as a 66 up. Strange but it's a way around the current import laws, that don't allow the registering of the late model Mexican Beetles here in the USA. John La Francois '65 1500 S Notch (Nub) '67 Beetle (Bailey) '98 Jetta GL (Wolfgang) Blauvelt, NY USA what really blew ME away, was crouching down to look under a 1997 Mexican Beetle at a show here in NY and seeing a swing axle setup... why would they keep such an outdated inferior setup so long??
