The most common way for water to get in there is thru a broken "overflow" hose. Look behind the filler pipe, under the RF fender. It will either be cracked thru in many places or completely broken off. You MUST fix this if you want to avoid future damage to fuel system parts. The gas tank is just the start. Water gets literally pumped in there when you drive in the rain or just on wet pavement.
