How about the ignition points? On the chance that the car has not been run in a while, the points can kind of corrode. While you're at it, check the dwell and timing, and make sure they're not pitted. Also, have you adjusted the valves? Unless somebody had the car freshly tuned up before you got it, it would be a good idea to take care of the general tune-up items before digging too deeply into other things. Heck, I don't trust other people's tune-ups, anyway... ;) '71 is my hands-down favorite year for the best combination of stock power/reliability/driveability/simplicity/parts availability/not lots of emissions stuff -- for Types I, II *and* III!
