This is a good question which others have alluded to. I really don't 
think the exhaust pipes carry any significant heat away from the 
heads, but I could be wrong. Mostly, I base that opinion on the fact 
that the exhaust gaskets are pretty good insulators.

With the car standing still you would get some extra heat rising up 
from hot heat exchangers, or J-tubes, but I don't think this will add 
much real heat load to the engine when it matters (when you're 
moving and the engine is working hard.)

So my vote would be for #3 above.
