That's a very good point! A dull glow begins at about 1100F, and I've 
never seen one of my pipes glow. By 1400F the glow is quite bright.

I wouldn't be surprised if the exhaust gasses were as hot as 2000F, 
or more, but it's pretty clear that the pipes themselves stay a lot 
cooler than that.
