There are good pictures and instructions in the Bentley manual, page 
8/46. A good picture is worth 1000 words and this is one of those 
times. Among other things it shows the inner wire secured to the 
inner face of the AT selector lever.

Is it possible that you don't have the cable housing anchor bracket? 
Both the inner wire and the outer housing must be secured on BOTH 
ends of the cable.
