Matt, This is probably going to sound silly, but. Can you push the distributor down into the drive shaft. Reason I ask is that something similar happened to myself recently and it turned out the distributor was just enough in (or out depending on your view) to allow it to test Ok but not fire when it should have. It backfired and popped, picked up power and then died. This was the problem. Eventually, I got home and put it in properly. Turned out previous owner (in my instance) didn't tighten it in properly.
