It becomes "more brittle" due to the accumulation of microcracks 
caused by water molecules on an atomic scale. There was a good 
article on this in Scientific American sometime in the last 20 years, 
I think. I don't think this leads either to a measurable change in 
thickness or to any change in the UV transmission properties.
