Re: [T3] Oil filter installation

Here is a way out lateral suggestion for creating a Type 3 with a full-flow oil
filter. It involves no drilling, tapping, welding, extra hoses, after-market
accessory bits and pieces and is stock standard VW approved.

Obtain from an engine rebuilder in Europe or order from an official Volkswagen
parts counter a complete block (two halves) of a "CT" or a "CZ" series engine
(CZ is the low compression motor). This is the 1600 single carburettor motor
used in European T3 Transporters or Vanagons (Types 24 and 25) for 1980, 1981
and 1982 models. It is a flat pancake motor like the Type 3's and not related
to the Type 4 motor at all. (US Vanagons of that period only had the Type 4
motor.) However, it came with a full-flow oil filter as standard (and also had
the added advantage of hydraulic tappets). Twin-carb Type 3 manifolds,
flywheel, clutch, tinware and other accessories should bolt on without serious
problems, although I have never tried it myself.
