What your describe is the FI brain mounting for the notchback.
The brain is vertical, on the left side of the trunk, the cover being
horizontal, on top of it, just slightly larger than the brain, way different
than the picture in Bentley. That got me really confused 3 years back when I
was starting working on it with only the Bentley as a reference, :-).

I don't think they were any FI type 34's ever made, but for sure I could not
resist to buy one if it would cross my view!
