I cut it open last week and here's what I found:

The primary coil is fine, but the secondary is open. I haven't tried to
dig down into the secondary to see exactly what happened, but
everything looks to be in pretty good shape. Nothing showed signs
of overheating.

You're right. This Mexican Bosch Blue coil sloshed when shaken. I
also have a Bosch Blue coil made in Portugal which sloshes. All
the rest of the OE can Blue coils that I have here are silent. I also
noticed that this coil has an alum can. ALL the others I have are
steel. I don't think this makes any difference, however.

Your coil was filled with transformer oil. The primary is wound in
several layers in a paper roll about 1" dia and 3" long. The
secondary is MANY layers, about the same length, ID about 1/2"
and OD just under 1". The magnetic core consists of about 2
dozen strips of steel, 1cm wide, 4" long, and 0.5mm thick.

There is a molded plastic piece in the bottom of the can which
supports and centers the coil within the can. Other than this plastic
part and the oil itself, no other part of the transformer is closer to
the can than 1/2"

I'm curious about how the construction of the OE Bosch coils
differs from the Blue coils, so if anyone has a dead OE coil that
they'd like to donate, please let me know.

My thanks to Mark Fuhriman for donating this one. ;-)
