I have a Mexican case that has been converted from horizontal to upright, so I'm sure that the conversion can go back the other way. There's a product that is sold to plug up the horizontal oil filler (it's just a plate and a gasket with two holes for bolts). The case is then tapped (I think near the place where a vertical oil filler would otherwise fit). And, voila! you have an upright engine. All it needs is a horizontal oil cooler and thermostat. My hand is now converting a horizontal engine (from a Type 34) to an upright one (for a beetle). They are both 1600 cc engines, the Type 34 being horizontal and the beetle being upright or vertical. If you would be willing to spring for $50 + shipping from Dallas, Texas, I'm sure that I can get my hand to sell you the oil cooler -thermostat setup and show you where to tap your case for horizontal operation. I'll even get him to throw in the horizontal oil filler. Everything else is the same. The Mexican case is currently residing in my 1971 bus on an upright basis. I assume that it was formerly in some Type 3 application. It has recently been rebuilt and has less than 400 miles on it. The Type 34 engine is out of a 1965 Type 34 Ghia, which is a Type 3. The engines are identical except for where the oil filler an thermostats reside. Don Garies dgaries808@aol.com ------------------------------------------------------------------- Too much?
