The fact that you have a tourist 65 is substantial in giving another avenue for the lack of sidemarkers in 65. But I still think more t3s made it to the US through Canada increasing the amount of markerless squares here.<< I think you're absolutely right that many early Notchbacks, Squarebacks, and Type 34s came to the US from Canada, but the original question was whether there even was such a thing as a pre-1966 US spec Type 3. My point was that there was, and that VW's literature confirms it. Anyone who wanted to individually import a Type 3 to the US could do so and VW made it easy by providing an option package that brought the Type 3s into compliance with US laws. You're also right that once Canada dropped the side parking lights that US and Canadian spec were essentially the same thing. There were many sources for Type 3s in the US before 1966, including individual imports (many by US servicemen in Europe), tourist delivery (Squarebacks only), via Canada, or the gray market. Even some official VW dealers sold gray market Type 3s. There were quite a few of them here from the beginning. I've heard that all 1500S models imported by VW Canada came with an Eberspacher gas heater as standard equipment. Does anyone know if that's true? if so, that would be possible indication of a car originally sold in Canada.
