WD40, big hammers, and finally clutch and brake abuse broke them free. There's actually a pretty easy way to free up the drum brakes. You just put a large punch thru the brake shoe inspection hole in the backing plate and place it against the shoe, not the lining. Then hit the punch hard with a hammer. A shoe that is free is held against the backing plate by the retaining pin and spring. If you knock it outwards it will spring out and then come back. If it is rusted to the drum then it will feel solid when you hit it. Just keep hitting it until it breaks loose. You'll have to do all 4 shoes. I'm careful now not to leave my parking brake on over the winter when my cars are unused. One spring day spent discovering how to break them loose taught me this lesson! - ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ------------------------------------------------------------------- Too much?
