Robert wrote,<Hello All, Well I'm about to start the body work on my fasty. A couple of quick questions. Does POR 15 kill the rust that is their or just cover it up? Can you paint over POR 15? What is Metal Ready Spray? and Finally My Fasty is stored under a carport and not a garage so it comes in contact with some weather. If I plan on painting the car but not any time soon can I still strip the old paint off and not have to worry about rust as long as I cover it with Metal Ready Spray and Primer. Thanks Again, Robert-Memphis> Robert, I don't know if por15 kills the rust, but it sure fills in the pits in the rust. The Metal ready is a pickleing agent and a zincing compound . They(the POR people) say that if left out in a sunny place the por15 will change colors , but still do it's job. I would prep the car with por15, then when you're ready to actually paint the car , use the por primer(tie coat) , then finish the paint like normal. This is what my son has been doing this summer on his bug, and it seems to work good for us as I've got a lot of other things going on at the same time. We're using it as a test subject to find out how good their products really are. I must say that I'm impressed with what I've seen so far though. If you just coat the outside of the car with Metal Ready Spray only it will continue to RUST until you seal it. On my sons bug , he stripped it to bare metal, marine cleaned it, metal ready prepped it, black por15ed it, tie coated it, fixed some dents with a little bondo, used a good sandable primer (automotive grade), and temporarily sealed it in good paint (not the final color). He did this so the bondo can do it's shrinking thing, and he ran out of good weather, as it starts getting iffy around this time of year here to do body work outside. When I was doing my Notch, I used it inside places that I wouldn't be able to get to later if I wanted to. I had it cut open at the time, because I was repairing rust in the "C" posts, the sunroof drain tubes, and the sunroof drain pan. And I also used it (por15) for the rear trunk floor, since it was just a lot of surface rust, and it gets covered by a heat mat and carpeting.(you won't see it) I hope this helps you out.
