The cause you're suggesting sounds like that of knock, or 
detonation, which can certainly cause damage to bearings, etc. 
But I wonder how you can differentiate this damage from that due 
to lots of cranking at low RPM where there is no hydrodynamic 
lubrication of the bearings.

In other words, isn't it possible that the culprit here really isn't the 
starting fluid at all, but the fact that the engine was cranked a lot 
with the starter which was not enough to get it lubricated.

I really don't have an answer here, just playing devil's advocate.
