The faulty pump keeps it from running, but the engine will always start from the fuel in the bowl. John, you probably either have a problem with the carb (in the delivery circuits or bowl) or with the spark. The starter spray is much more flammable than gas and will ignite easier. Once it has started, does it have any unusual behaviour?
