The wbx crank can not be used as is, the main bearing journals are different in size. Stock type1 sizes are: #1, 2 and 3 are 55 mm and #4 is 40 mm. On the wbx crank the same specs are: #1 60 mm, #2 and 3 55 mm and #4 40 mm. The reason the flywheel end (#1) is bigger on the wbx is that the wbx engine has 5 bolts to hold the flywheel to the crank, instead of 1 on the aircooled version. I believe that the case can be modified to fit the wbx crank, htink I have read somewhere that it has been done. The wbx crank is a good one, but I do not know whether it is cast or forged. None of my Vanagon manuals tell. The con rod bearing journals are the same size on both engines, 55 mm. Simon Glen mentioned that an Aus. company convert wbx engines to aircooled. Simon, would you please refresh our memories? You can also see wbx modifications at this site: http://www.nulogixcomputers.com/wasserboxerpower/start.htm Per-former Vanagon owner-L 73 Variant L Thorkhild wrote: > I have heard that a crank from a 2.1 wasserboxer vanagon engine can be used > in a type 1 case. ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org
