We generally had the old-style lights with separate lens and reflector, at least up to '72. The later cars (type1 & 2 at least, does Dave H know about '73 MY T3?) had a sealed-style light with the 3-screw mounting and single-screw rim, but it used normal head and parking lamp bulbs. This unit is also fitted to Mk1 Golfs (Rabbits) in Europe. One does see the style you describe on other (non VW) cars, but at least in the UK sealed-beams were never very popular, so the problem doesn't appear too often.
