from what i have learned is have them state the value as: "no resale value".

stiff from them off of ebay i sent it to my Sister's house in the states
(who i was going to visit shortly) and then just stuffed it in my luggage
and brought it back on teh plane. I was so glad i didn't get searched! They
would have thought i was going to make a bomb!(it was new wiring loom)

As I understand it there is no longer a distinction between air mail and
surface mail unless you're shipping literally overseas. USPS uses whatever's
best available.
