Does anyone have any experience with these? I don't, but I wonder 
if they would ever pick anything up since most of the stuff that 
wears off in an engine is non-magnetic.

Yes, and here they make lots of sense since the wear particles are 
all steel from the gears. When you drain the tranny you also need 
to clean out the crud from the magnet(s).
