Did you get the washer(s) all the way back down? The right way to install the washers is to insert a long wire down there first and them slide the washers down them. The tool I use to remove the drive gear is a Sears snap ring tool. It looks like some kind of large pliers that push outwards when you squeeze. They have teeth on the outside of the flat jaws and can grab in the slot in the drive gear. These will give you more purchase than any magnet. There is also a VW special tool that will provide even more grip.
