Yes, I'd mark the steering wheel position and remove the wheel so you can see in there. It's especially hard to remove the switch on the 72-3s, but I think you might be able to see something. Some kind of cleaning might just do the trick. If you see melted nylon when you get the wheel off then I suspect that someone goofed up the wiring some time in the past and drew too much current thru the switch. That should have just blown a fuse, but you can never be sure that the person didn't just put in a really large fuse, or a jumper.
