Don't know of any reason why it could not be used in this manner. But with a mechanical fuel pump on the engine you really don't have this issue. There are only two lines to worry about: the feed line from the tank to the pump and the line from the pump to the carb. If the first is broken then the pump will run out of fuel to pump and the engine will die. If the second one is broken then there is likely enough damage to the engine to kill it anyway. The problem really comes with electrically driven fuel pumps that will continue to run if the key is on after an accident and that are often mounted remote from the engine (almost exclusively in the fuel tank these days).
