Actually this is the way I've always done it. Use a light bulb to heat the
piston to ease in removing the wrist pin. Take the piston and clean it
thoughrally, especially if you are just replacing rings! Get all traces of
carbon off of the ring lands. Use a ball hone to break the cylinder glaze.
Grind the cylinders lightly into the heads W/valve grind compound. Get the
gasket sealing surface clean. Clean the cylinder w/soapy water, dry w/compr.
air, and oil.
Once everything is clean, dry, and oiled, put the wrist pin circlip in the
front (front is front) side of the piston. I prefer to use Teflon Buttons
for that added security. Using a conventional ring compressor, put the
pistons in to the cylinders. Leave out enough for the wrist pin to go
through. I put the wrist pins into the freezer the night before, not always
convenient but they just slip right into the piston and rod. You can use
heat, but I prefer not to.
Put the front P/C on first (either side). I just slip the cold wrist pin
in, pop the teflon buttons into place, then push the cylinder home. Put the
other P/C on, then put the head/push rod tubes on
and torque to the first step. Proceed to the other side. Don't forget the
cylinder air deflector tin before you put the Push rod tubes on!
I do all this with the help of a bench mounted engine stand, for $34
Canadian you can't go wrong with an engine stand!
Last note: I use yellow weather strip adhesive to seal my engines. I use
it on the block halves and the P/C. If used sparingly it works very well,
and keeps my driveway oil free!
I haven't includes all steps, so just use your imagination and the help
of Bentley/Clymer/Hayes/Chilton's to fill in the blanks.
Happy Easter to Everyone on the list!
