Thanks to all who responded!! You volks are the best. After thoroughly inspecting both sides of the pan inside and out I have found that the only area needing replacement is a roughly 2 by 3 foot rectangular piece of the passenger side pan extending lengthwise between the battery well and the area under the passenger seat. It's like tin foil! What an insidious, evil thing rust is. As replacement with a VW pan section does not seem to be an option I am going to take it around to get a few estimates for replacement with a sheet metal patch. The water was coming in through the hole under the battery tray (which fell through a decade or so ago and was neglected by yours truly) so hopefully this will keep the area dry. Now, any recommendations for how I should prep/paint the raw pan patch after I get it fixed so it doesn't rust out in 6 months? :) Thanks again!
