>>There are one or two derivative Brazilian models generally agreed to be Type 3s: the SP2, and certain Brasilia flavors. What do othey have in common? The primary indicators to me are the pan, engine and front-end assembly.<< I checked out the SP2 website out of curiosity and it says it's based on the Brazilian Variant platform, which (according to Simon Glen) means Type 1 front end and pan based on the Brazilian Karmann Ghia, so--at least by the pan/engine/front end measure--the SP2 isn't a Type 3. There's an SP2 technical spec page on the site that shows an overhead view of the floorpan that's pretty interesting. Check out that battery location. http://www.amplus.com.br/vwsp2/dados/ On the other hand, if it's only the Type 3 engine that makes a VW a Type 3 then there are a lot of Brazilian Type 3s, including the SP2 and apparently the later 4-portas.
