I don't agree.  The EA97 has some similar shaped body panels at the rear,
but the EA
97 was intended as a potential Beetle replacement; it's engine is quoted as
1192cc, and it's an entry model trather than a mid-range car.   As has been
stated it ended up with VW of Brasil and that's why there are (used to be)
lots of taxis over there looking like this.
It was developed in parallel with the EA160, which is recognisably a Type 3
Notchback.
The VW Museum in Wolfsburg has both these models on display (the Notch is a
4-door version), and include them in their catalogue with some history.  I
don't know if that book is available again in English yet; it was out of
print a few years ago certainly.
