Leaky valve cover gaskets can certainly allow oil to drip onto the heat exchangers and make the inside stink. That has happened to me. But you say the white smoke is coming out the exhaust? Look for signs of oil dripping out from the valve covers onto the heat exchangers. What does it smell like? Gas, oil, or (if automatic) burnt ATF? If the white smoke is coming out of the exhaust, then it sounds off hand like oil getting past the piston rings. Or you might be running rich. FI or carbs?
