I have a similar problem , but found it not to be the coupler as often
expected.

You can check this by lying under your car - right at the front of the
trans. there is  a cover held by 3 ? screws (check the Bentley on this) when
you open it you'll see the coupler, play with the shaft that comes from the
trans. from side to side and see on which side of the coupler the play is.

If your lucky , it's on the front (shifter) side and you only need to
replace the coupler , if your unlucky, like me, it's on the trans side and
you need to wait till you rebuild replace it, though I think it's probably
good for 50K more.
