As you use gas from the tank, there needs to be a path for air to get in the tank to replace the gas that has been used. If there is no vent, the air pressure forces on the outside of the tank can crush the tank. You NEED a vent somewhere. If there is another vent that you can use, that's fine, but otherwise this one is necessary.
