[T3] main shaft bearing



I looked for answers in the archives and was unable to find any pertinent
postings.
Therefore I turn to the list for answers. Please reply only to me unless you
feel others may benefit.

I have a '71 type III - fastback, compression check revealed the following: 135,
140, 135, 90.
Number 4 is always the one, no?

1)I'm told by my mechanic that the main shaft bearing creates flex and thus this
is where I'm loosing oil pressure and thus the cause behind my oil light coming
on. The light only comes on when I come to a stop after driving 20-30 minutes
(or more) at highway speed. It doesn't come on after my 5-10 minute drive to
work and back.

2)The front end of this car has been suspect, as in, at anywhere over 60-65 mph
I'm pretty much all over the road. Not pulling to just one side. This happens in
no wind conditions and could be described as looking like the guy at the wheel
was drunk. I've had several other vw's and this is worse than any of them.
Several different mechanics have said the front end linkages and steering
dampner look sound. The current mechanic believes that an alignment would cure
this problem - I'm not so sure, although it has been some time - 3 years since
the new tires and last alignment.

3) I only mention number 2 above because now I'm thinking of putting in a
rebuilt engine. Rust on the body is minimal and other areas seem sound. I
hesitate to put a new engine in a car that won't drive straight at higher
speeds.

4) So, if in fact I resolve the drift by getting an alignment, would you
"experts" suggest I put a rebuilt engine in or is the current engine, based on
the multitude of facts given above, simply in need of a rebuild?
