I don't think the hinge pins end up painted under the caps, but it's so oily
and dirty there I wouldn't be certain without a bit of a poke around.  My
'59 Beetle was certainly painted with doors on, as the hinge pins are
painted too.  I'm prepared to accept that doors were fitted later after
painting and interior fittings.  None of the door fittings (check stay,
locks, screws etc) are painted, so they were fitted after painting, but not
sure if on or off the car at the time.  As John J says, fitting off the car
would be difficult without damage (to the door edge eg).

There must be someone at the factory who could tell us, if they were
interested enough.
