RE: [T3] Air Filter Design Question
Design it!!! I've been working my noodle on and off about building an air
box for my 40s as well. Air would come from the stock air intake location
out of the rear plenum. Just haven't had the time/money to play lately (got
the welder and air compressor so those are no longer excuses ;)
Yes, design-in a K&N. They have a large variety of filter sizes and shapes
so getting the right one should be no problem. I scoured a local junk yard,
looking for the air box from different FI cars that would fit under my
decklid. Found some but upon test fitting they didn't work. Conclusion:
Gotta make your own!
Make sure the box encloses the entire top assembly of the carbs so the jets
are receiving the same air as the throats.
Induction noise may not go down, in fact, it may increase since both carbs
will be fed from the same 'tube'. Kind of difficult to say. But my stinger
drowns out most noise so for me it's a MUTE point (heheheh). I don't think
it'll make clutter, just look more custom :)
The biggest problem is making it large enough to pass the necessary volume
when we open our throttles. There's a local dude here who has a flow bench,
engine dyno, and does custom VW stuff (water pumpers). When I get the money
I plan on flowing my heads with, without air filters to get a baseline
reading. From there it's off to build an airbox that flows like the carbs
didn't have any filtration...
