[T3] sputter problem

hey all... I'm somewhat new to the list, and a rather
new type 3 owner.  I picked up a '72 fastback about 2
months ago, and on the whole, it's a great car.  

Today, i was driving home from work and started having
this sputtering problem.  The engine seems to be
starting fine, and when in neutral, the idle sounds
like it always has.  It's once i've taken off and am
shifting from first to second, that there is a
sputter, and the acceleration drops off.  If I try to
shift up to 3rd, it might pick up momentarily, but
then drops into the sputtering and backfiring.  So the
car is fine when it's not in gear, but isn't
accelerating at all.

One thing about the how the car has been running, is
that when it idles, it has a tendency to pulse. 
Nothing obtrusive, just a pulsing.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?
 I actually have been planning to do a tune up on it,
and maybe this is impetus to do it all the sooner. 
When doing the tune up, what all should I replace?

I'd appreciate any words of wisdom anyone would like
